Super Star is back but is it the same?

We reported a rumour that Superstar was opening on our blog here, and, as usual with rumours, this was wrong. Instead of opening on the 10th, it opened on the 6th! Our man high-tailed it over there to be among the first to review it, and here is what he said.

“I went along a little early to see the folks there and studied the outside. It looks the same as when it was here before, but with the addition of poster boards of sexy guys on the outside. Knowing those men wouldn’t ACTUALLY be inside, I went in. It’s very different from the place they had before. That was predominantly white, with a large projection TV playing on the backdrop of the tiny stage. This place is predominantly black, with a silver sparkly back wall. Instead of the TV screen, there were around 10 dancers to entertain before the show. They had matching white underwear with black strips. Interesting! There were no new faces in the crowd, I had seen all before, some many times. Cynically I thought too many times. It said something that I checked my email waiting for the show, rather than watched the boys. :( I wiggled in the seats to get comfortable. The benches were not designed for staying a long time! Drinks were 160B for a soft drink, 180 for beer.

The show started spot on time, despite the last of the cast walking in with a minute to go! The first number left me cold. Two dancers (one of which was the boss) and a transvestite with huge hair style and scary makeup. The boys were in black trousers, basques and small leaopard skin shoulder waistcoats. The TV had a weird rubber strap arrangement around her chest, with “leads” the boys were manipulating. Very odd. It was the worst bits of “Rocky Horror” all over again. But the dance was powerful and bouncy. Lots of energy.

After the number there was a short section of annoying link music. Bars ought to work to iron this out! it is possible – see The Venue or the X Boys shows.

The second number had two new dancing boys and a lady boy in silver waistcoats. Again it was fast,  bouncy, but the Botoxed smiles of the dancers were a little annoying.

On to number three. A big gap here. After a couple of minutes one of the staff realised they were meant to hang up a net “tube” from the ceiling, this was done quickly and two of the entertainment boys came in. They performed a sexy routine inside the net, although why they had the net at all I’m not sure. It served to get in the performers way and they were constantly adjusting it. Plus, it didn’t really need to be there in the first place as nothing naughty was revealed.

Back to the cabaret and there were two more numbers, one with the first pair of boys and a new lady boy, one with the second pair. Then back to the sexy boys. No net this time. The music was “I dreamed a dream” from Les Miserables. One boy lay on his back reading a copy of OUT magazine, while the other danced round him. The “dreaming” boy seemed far more interested in the magazine (I can’t say I blamed him). Finally the dancing boy started giving the dreamer a massage and that awoke his interest. But all too soon, before anything really interesting happened, the music ended and we went on. I was left thinking of Susan Boyle and how her performance had been more moving … (note to self – must check out YouTube).

By this time I was despairing of getting any great entertainment, when one of the first pair of boys – the boss – came on solo. He was wearing only a pair of sparkly briefs and danced a really amazing balletic solo number, including splits, acrobatics and pole work. THIS WAS WHAT I WAS WAITING FOR. I woke up and my interest had been revived.

The next number was the “wiggle” number, well performed and interesting. The finale was the first pair of boys (including the balletic boss), one of the two lady boys and the TV. They put on a really erotic and interesting number, with lots of interaction and play. Both the “ladies” worked the poles and each other!

To sum up. Interesting place. Odd mix of sexy, erotic and cabaret, which left me confused. Fairly standard show, with a smash hit, bang on ending. If the last three numbers had been representative of the whole show, I’d be there every night. I’ll be going again to see if this pattern is repeated, but it’s worth looking at, even if just for the ending.

Oh and if you’re in the area, they are having a grand opening party on Tuesday 11th! I’ll be there…!”
